Spring!

        Suki and Little One decided to rest by the daffodils a few days ago.

This is a blow-up of Little One from the same photo.  I love the way his tongue is slightly sticking out!

Rainy Pintos

There have been a lot of storms here the past week and so the pintos did not come up as often as usual. Several days ago they were here and I fed them carrots and alpha squares in the rain. Suddenly it began to hail and I was laughing and they were eating as fast as they could.
They came up again this morning in the drizzle and I fed them. Several hours later I went out to photograph them for this blog and they obliged by lining up.
Notice how big Suki is getting! He is now 6 months old.
You will notice an overturned bench in the left hand corner - this is where I feed them. They often knock the bench over after being fed or if I am not around, they are disappointed that I have not been out to give them their treats.
We hope to evenutally build a corral around this bench so we can start taking better care of them. First we have to be sure we can adopt them and then raise money to build the corral, fence the land, and have them seen by a vet.

Red Letter Day

Monday, the pintos came up for carrots and alpha squares. When I call "Thunder" they all galloped to the bench where I feed them. What a beautiful sight to see them all run. Still haven't been able to capture a great running photo yet. Suki, the colt who is now now 5 months old, is a fast and graceful runner.

What made it a very special day is that all of the pintos, except for Thunder, let me stroke their backs. Even Sweetie, who is always skitterish and shutters when touched, but this time he held still a few seconds longer. I was delighted and blown away. We will see if I am able to stroke them again at their next visit. Even so, I am amazed at how they are progressing with human contact.

THE PINTOS AND I WISH YOU A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I had been wondering for awhile how to make a holiday card with the pintos and I knew I couldn't put a wreath on one of them, since they are wild. Low and behold one day Polka Dot shows up at the back door with this branch stuck to her! Thank you Polka Dot!

Thunder and Suki

It has been awhile since I have written a post. December has been very busy with lots of pinto calendar sales and greeting card orders.
The weather has often been foggy and rainy and so the pintos did not come up as often. Suki is definitly going to be whte and black (rather than brown-for awhile he was looking lighter). He is getting bigger every time I see him. He has a trusting personality and now eats his share of alpha squares and carrots. He allows me to hug him and is a delight to watch when he runs.
Been trying for awhile to get a photo of him next to his father, Thunder and this is the best one so far.

A vote for Thunder

Thunder is such a majestic stallion. I have photographed him many times and it is an ongoing challenge to reveal his true nature in a one photo. He can be very curious, shy, watchful, protective, and intense. When I am feeding all the horses sometimes he stands to the side and other times he gets very close to me. He watches as we pet and hug the colt, and we often get the feeling he would like to be able to allow himself that treat as well. He has only taken a carrot from our hand about 3-4 times in the year that we have been feeding the horses. Each time he was very surprised and startled himself. You know he wants it when we hold the carrot out, because he will nip at another horse if they try to get it. He can seem very sweet at times and of course other times he is clearly in charge!
